If someone were l to ask me which word I hated it would be the word: normal. People love using this word to cover discrimination, racism, sexism, ageism, etc. If you look at the meaning you might get a better idea. As per Google, the meaning of normal is: conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.

Let's start with conforming to a standard. In other words accepting to live by what others determined was accepted. What makes others qualified to decide what I should follow. And I'm not talking about laws but about expectations.

To be usual? When you look at this word it means: to habitually or typically occurring or done; customary. Which means I have to follow the wave and not go against it. I have to follow what others do to be accepted.

Not the word typical means: having the distinctive qualities of a particular type of person or thing. But who decides what is typical. Every culture is different and every person is also different so what defines this term.

And lastly the expected. I think this is the worse of them. I have to do what is expected of society in general. You have to do what is expected from your wife, husband, child, mother, father, neighbor, politician, law reinforcement, managers, coworkers, teachers, etc. At any given moment you are portraying what society wants you.

As much as being "normal" might be necessary to maintain a civilized society. It also opens the doors to all the things that I mentioned at the beginning. At the end of the day there is no such thing as normal since it is like beauty, in the eye of the beholder.
